Obhof was born on November 26, 1977 in Ashtabula, Ohio.[1] He received a bachelor's degree from the Ohio State University and a law degree from Yale Law School. Obhof teaches courses on legislation at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, where he holds an adjunct professor position.[4] He is also employed by Baker & Hostetler LLP in Cleveland, Ohio.[4]
Obhof is married, has two children, and lives in Montville Township, Medina County, Ohio.[4]
In 2008, Bob Gibbs won a term in the Ohio Senate after serving three terms in the Ohio House of Representatives. However, in 2010, he opted to run for a seat in the United States House of Representatives, facing Congressman Zack Space in Ohio's 18th congressional district. He ultimately won, and shortly after resigned from his seat in the Senate. Since it was an unexpired term, Senate Republicans were tasked with finding a replacement for Gibbs to appoint to fill the remainder of the term, which would end in 2012. Obhof was one of seven who sought the appointment.[5]
In early 2011, Senate President Tom Niehaus announced that Obhof would be the appointee to the vacant seat. He was sworn into office on February 1, 2011, along with Senator-elect Cliff Hite, who also was appointed to another vacant seat. He is currently serving on the committees of Education; Financial Institutions; Government Oversight and Reform; and Judiciary (as vice chairman).
